What is the Social Progress Index?
⇒ The Social Progress Index (SPI) is a comprehensive framework designed to measure how well a place delivers the outcomes that matter most to people. Accessible here: 2025 Social Progress Index for Southwark
⇒ The SPI has been developed by Impact on Urban Health and is linked to a wider piece of work around the Urban Health Index for Lambeth and Southwark. More information can be found here: Urban Health Index 2025 – Impact on Urban Health.
How can you use the SPI?
⇒ The Southwark SPI measures social progress using a detailed framework of indicators across 23 wards. Policymakers, partners, residents and other stakeholders can use the index to compare their ward against others on different facets of social progress, allowing the identification of specific areas of strength or weakness.
⇒ The SPI provides a data-led foundation to help the council track progress against its Southwark 2030 ambition and to translate it into actionable place-based strategies. It focuses on residents’ lived experiences by measuring outcomes beyond economic metrics, covering areas such as basic needs, wellbeing foundations and access to opportunity.
